Speed Dating Questions
Speed dating is arguably one of the most efficient ways to meet other singles. If anything, at least the power
of sheer numbers is on your side. However, before the big event you should have some idea of what you will talk
about during each 5 minute session. Having a list of speed dating questions will certainly take the edge off and
ensure that things go as smoothly as possible.
Here are some questions you can use to get the ball rolling. Keep in mind that you will likely have to change
your strategy a little with each person. Thus, your ability to read people quickly will be crucial.
You should organize your questions into at least three groups. The first group of questions should be used when
you are making that all important first contact. Since you have no idea who you are talking to, the questions in
this group should be fairly general in nature. Here’s an example:
Where are you from?
What do you do for a living?
What brought you to this speed dating venue?
What are your hobbies?
What do you do for fun?
Have you seen any good movies lately?
What kind of music do you prefer?
Listen carefully to their responses before you continue with more personal questions. If you detect any sort of
hostility or reluctance to engage in small-talk, then simply ride out the remaining few minutes by answering a few
of their questions or simply try talking about the weather.
If you get a decent response from those preliminary questions, then time is of the essence. Try asking:
Do you have (or want) any children?
What is your idea of a perfect man/woman?
What is your favourite color, pet, film, book, sport, etc…
If you are really feeling sure of yourself, you could ask:
Have you ever been married or been in a long-term relationship?
Have you ever participated in speed dating before?
When was your last serious relationship?
Additionally, you could ask “What if” type questions to find out more about their true personality. These could
include:
“If you won a million dollars, what would you do?” (This demonstrates financial sense and responsibility – or
not).
“You and I are stranded in the middle of nowhere. What will you do – and in what order will you do it?” (This
demonstrates their ability to deal with situations and to get things done).
“If you were told you had less than a year to live, what would you want to accomplish? How would you spend your
time?” (This speaks volumes about their character).
Topics to stay away from, as always, are religion and politics. Actually, any topic that has the potential to be
controversial should be avoided. Besides, you’ve only got a few minutes to make a good impression – stick with
lighter topics.
Remember, your number one asset in speed dating will be your ability to read people quickly and tailor your
approach and questions accordingly. Efficiency is the name of the game and you can’t go wrong with a good list of
speed dating questions.
